I am so sorry. I did check with our resident handyman and his opinion is the same as yours - there is no alternative to the sagging other than replacing the ceiling. He did say that nailing the old ceiling up tighter and covering with false beams.
Well - I didn't get that finished - the false beams would look planned and the ceiling would not sag - but you understood that before my clumsy addition.
